Four Tips for Renting a Scissor Lift for Your Residential Tree Trimming Project

About Me

Maintaining Industrial Equipment During the school holidays last year, I spent time working at my family's manufacturing plant. They have a lot of industrial equipment, and I spent most of my time shadowing the maintenance manager. It was fascinating to see the amount of care and cleaning which goes into making sure all the machines run smoothly. I began this blog as a way to document the different types of maintenance I learned for two reasons. Firstly, because I aim to take over the family business one day, and also to share my knowledge with others who are interested in running their own manufacturing plant.

A scissor lift is a safe and steady platform used to lift people and equipment to a higher level easily. Unlike ladders, scissor lifts are stable and provide adequate safety when trimming tree branches. However, since scissor lifts are available in various configurations, it is essential for you to choose the right one for your project. With this in mind, here are four tips for renting a scissor lift for your tree trimming project.

Assess load vs. equipment's weight capacity

Scissor lifts have varying weight capacities. You should never exceed an equipment's weight capacity, as this can cause it to tip over. Therefore, before renting a scissor lift, find out your maximum load. The load refers to the weight of the individuals occupying the platform and the tools carried onto the platform. Use the total weight of the individuals and the tools to find the right equipment for the job. Also, rent a scissor lift that slightly exceeds the projected maximum load to avoid tip-over accidents.

Consider the terrain and weather

What is the terrain like in your backyard? Is the ground smooth or rough? What will the weather be like throughout the project? Is there any possibility of rain? Different scissor lifts are suited to different terrains. If the equipment you choose isn't suited to the terrain and prevailing weather, it can get stuck or tip over. A rough-terrain scissor lift has heavy-duty tyres ideal for slopes, uneven surfaces and muddy terrain. Conversely, standard scissor lifts have conventional wheels for indoor use and even outdoor terrain. Therefore, select the right equipment to avoid accidents and unnecessary downtime.

Determine the required lifting height

A scissor lift's lifting height is the maximum elevation the equipment can provide. You need equipment that allows you to access the tallest trees without stretching dangerously above the platform. Scissor lifts come in different lifting heights, with some equipment providing an elevation of over 10 meters. Therefore, check the height of the tallest trees you want to trim and rent equipment that will provide easy access.

Choose a suitable fuel type

Most rough-terrain scissor lifts are powered by gas, propane or diesel. However, since these scissor lifts are meant for outdoor use, they produce unpleasant noises and emissions. Therefore, if you are concerned about noise, you can rent an electric scissor lift, which operates quietly and does not emit fumes into the environment. However, since electric scissor lifts are suitable only for even terrain, you shouldn't use them on wet or uneven ground.

A scissor lift rental can speed up your tree-trimming project and reduce the risks associated with ladders. Choose the equipment that is best suited to your project. Contact a professional for more information about scissor lifts
